Against All Gods

Docutainment - 2024, ZDF, 6 EPISODES
DIRECTor:
Aurelia Kanetzky
DOP: Johannes Obermaier

A Jew, a Muslim, a Catholic, a Hindu, a Buddhist, and an atheist under one roof—can that possibly work out?

They are young, diverse, and all but one are devout believers. They are embarking on a long-overdue experiment: moving into a shared flat to discover, in just six days, what divides and unites them—and to thoroughly challenge (false) clichés and prejudices.

A shared apartment with new perspectives and contrasts that at first seem irreconcilable.

Our aim was to answer one of the most pressing questions of our time: Is a world possible where all religions live together in peace? AGAINST ALL GODS provides the answer.

A project that will stay with us for a long time, featuring six impressive protagonists and guests such as Sabine Rückert, Maria Popov, and Jürgen Trittin. From the question, “How much Alman is in you?” to religious rules on love, sex, and relationships, experiences of exclusion, and the Middle East conflict, the stakes eventually reach 4,000 meters: Who dares to take the plunge, and how strong will the nerves hold on thematic minefields?

Aurelia: “Only through coming together can we allow new perspectives and recognize that our society, like our world, is most beautiful and exciting in its diversity. If people can take a step toward each other in just six days, then it can happen anywhere. It is our collective responsibility to carry forward the message of this format. No matter which religion or belief we cling to, hatred, war, and rejection are not a part of it. But love, love is always allowed.”

Katharina: “We set out with the idea of an experiment, but also with a concrete goal: to show that people from different— in our case, religious—backgrounds are capable of finding common ground instead of emphasizing differences. What is clear to me: If we have the willingness to tolerate diversity in all its facets, then we can live in a better, more peaceful country.”
